You should have really sorted it before you booked as it won't cover anything that may happen if you need to cancel the holiday/volcanic ash and crazy things like that.

But anyways, does your bank offer a packaged account with family insurance, if you are eligible to upgrade to it do that for a month then downgrade when you return.

As long as the policy is taken out before the event occurs it'll be covered (assuming that particular event is included in policy cover).

And many policies didn't pay out for volcanic ash anyway, no matter when the policy was taken out.
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

Great, So for examples sake I am diagnosed tomorrow with an un-cureable condition, I can get insurance and get the trip refunded?

Yes, if you purchased your insurance before investigations into your illness began and your doctor deems you unfit to travel.

Exactly, so you should always buy travel insurance at the time of booking your holiday then to ensure you will be fully covered for any situation.

Ideally yes, in most cases, although this isn't always possible and there may be circumstances where, on balance, there are benefits to not always doing this immediately.

    But your first post

implies that because the OP didn't take out a policy at the time of booking that they won't be covered for cancellation. Maybe you didn't mean it that way, but I thought it was misleading.
If OP takes out a policy today, they'll be covered from today, provided that any event that may cause them to need to cancel is not already in play.
