If you need to use electricity for heating it might be worth thinking about a heat pump. You could have a look at:
https://www.trianco.co.uk/activair.cfm
A heat pump will give you 3 or 4kW of heat for every kW of electricity (COP = coefficient of performance).0 -
Can anyone give an estimate of how many units of electricity these use, say per hour?, I'm thinking of having one fitted with some form of renewable energy, solar or wind for example0

Can I delve here please?
What type of electric have you got?
What are the costs/type of home you are heating?
I have a 12kw electroheat boiler made by amptec......Has anybody else got one of these monsters?
My housing association installed it 3 and half years ago after the run down dangerous rayburn i had eventually bit the dust.
It cost them £3.000 for the whole job (radiators, thermostat, boiler, tank in loft. We do not have a gas supply so basically they rushed in and accepted the first quote without any proper research into it.
I am in total fuel poverty because of this. In the cold months if i have it on for say 4 hrs a day and no more that will cost me on average £50 per week it is totally ridiculous.
I dare not have it on the timer to come on every morning/evening like most people. I literally only put it on when we are sbsolutely frozen. I would estimate that if i had the heating on for 6-7 hours a day and say extra at weekends it would cost near on £100 per week. I am in a major dispute at the moment with them about all this.
I want them to understand that i cannot afford this kind of money...i am a single parent with no help towards my council tax, no housing benefit. my rent is £75 per week and my heating costs are nearly as much some weeks.
Sorry for late reply and hope that helps (sorry f i ranted on a bit but wouldnt wish this on anybody)

For what its worth.
When I bought my house some 20 years ago, we had installed an all electric system, as there is no gas in the village.
The system comprises normal wet radiators, but they are connected to a 400gal thermally insulated tank, which has 6 large immersion elements, 3 at the bottom level and 3 half way up. These all come on overnight on E7. Hot water is then bled from this tank and pumped round the system during the day as normal. Overnight heat build up is normally sufficient for all day heating, apart from the severest of days, when the top level of heaters kick in to boast heat.
My total electricity bill for the year is £1416 and this is for everything heat, light, cooking, hot water. We have a large 4/5 bedroom house, so overall I am quite pleased with the system.
HOWEVER, I don't know whether this type of system is still available.0 -

His very interesting. I was just thinking of installing an electric bolier to replace the bottled gas we use at the moment. We have a wet radiator system run off this. No mains gas, cannot site an oil or gas tank- so what choice do we have?
Any suggestions would be gratefully received. The property has 6 rooms including kitchen and bathroom. There is no hall and the 2 bedrooms in the cottage roof. I was built circa 1800 with thick walls.0
