About 10% of the cost of running a tumble dryer. Moving air drys clothes more effectively than warm air.

Trust me, I'm a science teacher

    Are you sure about that.

A 1000w heater would cost circa £1.36 based on 17p per KWH.

Are you saying a dryer would cost £13.60 to run for an hour

aye but what about the comparative efficiency? you're heating an entire room (with the window open) as opposed to a much smaller cylinder that is designed to do the job.

I don't really know how to make the calculation but :
    electric fan 2kW @ 8 hours
    tumble drier 2.5kW @ <2 hours?

electric fan more like 45w (ish)

no need for heat just wind

    Listen to the teacher:)

Not a fan heater, I use a simple electric fan. 40 watts/hour at full speed, I use a slower speed

    1. To tumble creases out of clothes that you can't be bothered to iron
    2. Because you pay rent and should be able to use as much energy as you like when its included, stuff the landlord - rent money is dead money, you don't get anything back in return, who wants to pay off someone else's mortgage anyhow, etc.
    3. Hanging it out on a sunny day requires you to walk an extra 5 yards to the garden and hang each item out by peg and then do the same actions again to take the dry laundry in. That sucks when you can just scoope them all into a machine and press a button (and fail on every occasion to remove the fluff on the filter to prevent damage to the machine, as instructed).

I was gradually becoming more enraged as I read this.. until I finally realised!

    Put on electric fan

Turn off radiator, shut the door

Clothes dry in 8 hours, no big electricity bills or damp

I've got a halogen heater and I calculated the running costs at about £1 or so for 8 hours. Publicity often says that halogen heaters cost just a £1 a day but that's bull.

It's got a cut-off so if it falls over, there's no risk (there's a button on the bottom that has to be depressed to make it work so if it topples, it cuts out). However, if an item of clothing falls on it, there will be a fire.

But actually, my cat parks himself in front of it so I don't think the wet clothes would receive much heat....
  • Thankfully he asked you first before you accepted him. But be wary, my lodger has installed a fridge and uses an electric clothes dryer without my permission. This has caused huge problems with condensation in her room and the double glazed window seals are now gone which will probably cost me hundreds of pounds to put right. I have addressed the issue of drying her clothes in her room and pointed out that I dry my clothes at the launderette which is walking distance from my flat. Her reply was that she doesn't have a car! Neither do I, I walk there. I'm 52 and she's 29. I too am running out of tolerance for having paying lodgers. My last 3 lodgers were great, no problems at all. Sorry for the rant.

Didn't you take a bond/deposit? Use that to fix your windows, that's what it's there for!

Is there any greater condensation problem with drying on a clothes horse or with a fan heater? The same amount of water will end up in the air.

I wouldn't dwell too much on this error by a typical layperson, but when it comes from a science teacher...
