Bank debt over 6 years old

I have just received a letter from a debt collectors regarding a debt of £300 to a bank whom I had an account with back in 1997. They closed my account in 2000 and I have since moved around a lot.

As it has taken them 7 years to get in touch, am I still liable to pay this debt?

The debt is built up from bank charges incurred, which as we all know are unlawful. So, if I am not able to claim back the charges as it has been over 6 years, does the same time limit apply to them?

if you haven't acknowledged the debt for six years (basically haven't paid any money or offered to pay) then the debt is unenforceable due the the statute of limitations.

As an aside and agreeing with Clapton, the matter of the debt being for charges is IMO irrelevant as any credits paid in after the creation of a charge would have paid the charge. Their is a general assumption that first credits extinguish first debits and vice versa. Your debt would consist therefore of the latest created debits less any credits not placed against earlier debits.

It's known as the Rule in Clayton: once sacrosanct but now it is not so much.
