Proxy Server problem

Hi folks, I have a problem with "proxy server". Bear with me as I'm not very technically minded, but will try and explain the problem. We have a desktop and a laptop, the DT is wired and the LT is wireless, the problem is with the DT. The DT runs Windows 7 and Google Chrome.

For the last week or so, we keep getting kicked off the internet and when oh goes into settings, the box that says "use a proxy server for your LAN" is ticked. When we untick the box, everything works fine, this can last from a few minutes to a couple of hours. Now here is the problem, when he gets kicked off and goes back into the settings, the box has been "ticked" again!! How can we keep it unticked and why or what is causing it to be ticked?

ETA we have tried ticking the "bypass proxy server for local addresses" but it makes no difference.

On a "normal" domestic Internet connection, that box shouldn't be ticked (and you really should be able to un-tick it and keep it that way!)

Do you have any Chrome extensions installed? Or has someone installed some proxy software on your PC? If not, it would be worth running a scan for malware with something like MBAM, adwCleaner (see links) and your antivirus.

I'm not sure if oh has installed any extensions, I don't use the DT, but no one has installed any proxy software though. I'll tell him to run a malware and virus scan when he comes in, thank you. :)
