Dont give her up, just get more trays and get her cystitis sorted out. Every cat has the odd accident and many will only use a tray once, thats why you need more than 1.
Remember all this is new to her as well, so give her time and make life as easy as possible for her to toilet.
What about on a night keeping her in the kitchen or utility with a few trays. Then if theres an accident you can clean it up easily.
When I got one of my cats he had a upset tummy and went in my bedroom. When I woke up the next day I had poo on me as he had done a small bit in my bed!. I had to strip and wash all the bedding and get some of it dry cleaned as I have throws etc. I didnt think about giving him up I just made sure I sorted out his diarreah and dont let him in the bedroom by himself.
I'm sure with patience you will be able to sort her out.

It isnt the odd accident though, its much more than that.
She is seeing a vet tomorrow, so i will hopefully know more after that.

Thanks dandelionclock30 I really hope she is OK and its something we can sort out and she can come back.

Ive been so upset and emotional over it, which I know sounds silly as we have only had her a couple of days. I even started crying when the cats protection lady came to take her off to the vets.

Have you made a decision now ?

It could be that your cat is weeing in response to stress or mark her territory *. If you still have her, perhaps try plugging in some Feliway diffusers (one on each floor). It helped with all of our three when we were introducing them.

I would also urge you to :

    1. go and buy a spray from Pets at home or similar to clean up after her accidents. You really do need something like this to break down the organics

    2. increase the number of litter boxes in the house. One on each floor would be minimum

*ETA: we have first hand experience of a cat toileting inappropriately : Maisie would wee & poo every day, drove us crazy. Until we realised that our cat flap was malfunctioning and allowing neighbourhood cats into the house. Her toileting was a response to that. Similarly, your kitty could be desperately trying to establish herself & feel safe in her new home?

I hope you have managed to get something sorted out. It may help to share our experiences - when a cat that we had with recurrent cystitis was having a bout of it, she would wee around the house. I believe it's because she associated weeing in the litter tray with pain, so tried other places. As soon as the cystitis was treated each time she was using the litter tray happily again.
  • What did the vet say Fran? If it is behavioural have you thought of the cat just living an outdoor lifestyle. Maybe get a little cathouse in the garden. It would be a shame to send her back in case they put her down.

Hi all, thanks for your responces.
She has been to the vet, and has cystitis. The cats protection have taken her to their cattery for the weekend and are getting her scanned on monday just to check there is nothing more.

I would like to have her back if we can be reasured that the weeing is not going to be a permenant issue.

However at the moment my husband is refusing to have her back. Im hoping he will calm down about it over the weekend and agree to have her back.

Im feeling really crappy about it, my boys want their cat back and so do I but im not sure its something my husband can put up with it.

I sympathise, as I know how frustrating it is to have a cat that soils the house.

However, soiling issues generally happen for a reason. Physical or psychological, I'm sure that the situation can be turned around. Your husband must be prepared for the "long haul" & expect kitty to have a few more accidents before she gets better.

You have confirmed that she has cystitis - a common cause of inappropriate toileting. Even if this is not the root cause of the problem, then don't give up - it still could be that she's marking her territory because she feels insecure.

If you do decide to give her a chance, and I really really hope you do, please please give her the best chance of staying with you:

    1. Whilst kitty is away over the weekend, please pop out & get that deodoriser spray I've mentioned before & thoroughly treat any areas she has been in.

    2. get feliway plug ins. Put one on each floor at the very least & keep them on all day & all night. Do it today so that it has a chance to build up before she comes back

    3. prepare hubby for more accidents. It sounds like she's been passed from pillar to post & has not had a great deal of stability in her life. She needs to settle in.

    Hi

We adopted a rescue cat and have this problem. It's better in summer as he's out more. We've got it down to an accident every 2 months. We have laminate floors so it's not too bad.

These are the steps I took

    1) bought urine off spray from amazon - prevents re soiling (wee ing)
    2) added another litter tray upstairs
    3) reward him with a treat when he uses the litter tray
    4) observe when he's most likely to do it- this can be hunger or just after a meal or he will come and sit in front of me(still working on this)
    5) installed a micro chip cat flap so he can go in and out himself

It can be linked to strange cats outside.

He also suffers from cystitis which has been diagnosed by a vet after a stay in a cattery. Now we add a bit of warm water to his food, cut out go Kat biscuits and got the royal canine feline urinary tract ones.

We've had him 2 years now and he's lovely but hard work when he piddles. For him it's a combination of things causing him to wee elsewhere - our other cat, tendency towards cystitis and being locked in/ locked out and then abandoned. He was spayed late and may have been taken from his mother too early. Poor thing! But I love him and am willing to keep trying to identify his triggers.

I really don't blame you for having second thoughts. Perhaps if I had known beforehand I would have given him the swerve or found out within a few days but now I've found out how loving he is and such a character we are his forever home

Its been a hard decision but ive signed her back over to cats protection so they can make decisions about her care and operations, scans etc. They think its going to be a persistent behavioural issue after getting more info from her previous owners as well as a possible medical problem. This would mean i can not keep her due to my husbands feelings about the weeing.
They have kindly offered to keep me in the loop about her care as I obviously care what happens to her and they have apologised that we had to go through this.

Its been really helpful to read all the posts, thankyou everyone who replied.
