Should I close unused accounts?

Sorry if this has been covered I have looked but sever lack of sleep means my brain won't work properly!
Ok I just signed up to Noddle to view the credit file they have on me. Surprisingly none of my 'old' debt is showing (I have 2 ccj's I am paying at a ridiculously low rate from years ago and some other debts that were agreed at a silly anount per month through CAB) I am still paying these and to be honest really need to find out who I have paid what too as I don't actually have a clue!
My question is I opened a catalogue account but returned the item ordered as it was no good and have never looked at placing an order since should I close this account? Will that help my credit rating? I have other catalogues open and being used and paid no late payments etc. I also have credit cards but sadly they are maxed out BUT I am concentrating on paying a lot off this year. I also have another catalogue that I used and have fully cleared do I close that too or is it good to have it sitting there?
Thanks in advance for any advice I just want to get to a point where I can get a decent APR instead of the stupidly high ones I have now :-)

I am by no means an expert and I am unsure whether catalogues are maybe not saw as a good thing but the general advice seems to be to close unused accounts.
However I followed this advice and I don't think it has did me any favours especially as it was a long standing account. I noted someone the other day also posted that Esperia indicates what percentage of your borrowing your at. I am unsure if store cards and catalogues come into that.
I am sure other members will no far more than me :-)0
