Hotel room charge USA disagreement

So we got home from Florida disney last month. When we were there we used the room charge facility, it's all got PIN numbers etc. anyway on our last day we checked he bill and there was a $400 purchase from one of the art stores that was no way ours. We didn't loose our cards or anything and it was 1 purchase on the 3rd day of our stay. We went tot eh front desk and argued it ere but eh said would have to be forwarded to billing but I wasn't happy as I knew they had my card on file and I also knew we wouldn't have he extra $400 left on it at the end of a 3 week holiday which we'd used it for (post office 0% on foreign transactions so used it for everything)
Anyway we had no choice but to leave it with them. So they haven't sorted it, the charges as rejected as over my limit etc and so I've received a bill from them in the post, still with this $400 on it! So I've phoned them again today and they said that there's nothing they can do?.? The transaction shows our account. So what do I do? Pay?.. That's like £250 or more!! Hubby said send them a cheque for the bill minus the $400 and just refuse to pay it but I'm scared to do that!! Any advice?...

pay the undisputed portion and include a note saying that you dispute that part of the bill. That IS legal and will stop them being able to set up a court claim against you (or at least winning one)

No it won't. They could still raise a claim if they wished, and could still win. It would just mean that the OP had some evidence of the dispute.

Unless you have a US bank account (or possibly a USD denominated account here) you won't be able to send a cheque anyway.

Isn't this a credit card? So it the $400 on the credit card bill? If you don't pay it the post office credit card people will chase you.

The thing to do is to ring the credit card customer services and say you dispute the bill. They will then sort it out (hopefully). If the hotel is claiming you bought something then they should have a signature on a slip on file for this. Or are they saying they just take someone's word that they are in room 101, please put it on my hotel bill, but I'll take it with me now???

I got the impression it was a prepay card with a fixed limit that the OP loaded on it, not a credit card. Perhaps I'm wrong.

If it was a Disney stay they can purchase goods from the stores and it's delivered directly to the room. So if the bill says room 101 then a member of staff lets themselves into the room if no-one is in and leaves it there, hard to miss and unlikely to get both the order and delivery wrong.

The billing is done with pin numbers linked directly to the room, pretty much a fool proof system so someone would have to know your room number and your pin to make the purchase.

The card was a prepaid one so the total amount was refused. I have no problem sending the money we actually owe. It was at disney with these new magic band things. You do have to enter a pin to make any purchase but this still showed up on our account. They've told ,e what the item was, where it was purchased and when etc. it was purchased at one of the art shops in downtown disney, the time of the purchase is noted on the printed invoice and we were I the Hollywood studios theme park that night. There's even a charge on it from us there for food about 50 minutes before the purchase in downtown disney which I pointed out but you get 4 of these magic bands for a family of 4 so technically we could have been split up, hardly likely as I pointed out with a 2 year old and 6 month old but it was like talking to a brick wall.
I just don't get it. And I hate to dissapoint but there are no porkies being told here!
