Taxing Car After VIC...HELP?!
Hi hoping someone can help.
Had a Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) done today after my car was declared Cat C write off (repairs done, mot done etc). I now want to get it taxed but don't seem to be getting a clear answer.
They issued me a V62 form to complete and send off to DVLA, but said this can take 14 days. He explained that previously I could have gone to a DVLA office to get tax immediately, but they've all closed down now.
Another option he gave me was to take it into the post office to get tax, but told me they will charge me the £25 fee (the fee from the V62 that I should be exempt from). I believe he said I could claim that ack though.
However, they keep referencing me NOT having my V5C (registration document), but I do in fact have it. My insurers never requested I send it in.
So with that in mind, can I not just take my V5C into the post office and get tax like normal?
If yes though, do I not have to get a replacement V5C which will indicate the cat c status?
Any help really appreciated!

If you need to tax it then its worth taking your documents to the post office and see if they process it.
Worst case they refuse. Or the DVLA ask for the old V5C back and send you a new one.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I thought as long as you had a V5 you could tax at post office even if the car hadn't gone through VIC
But, successive governments seem to be hell bent on pointlessly making car tax as hard & inconvenient as possible so that might well have changed0 -

Well I've also been told by DVLA (albeit unsure how accurate this is), that if I have my logbook (which I do), the only thing stopping me getting tax right now from post office is that the VIC marker has not been removed yet. According to VOSA, this can take 48 hours! Yet they set the VIC marker VERY QUICKLY! Funny that!
So seemingly, if I try and get ta from post office right now, before theyve all updated their records and removed my VIC marker, I won't be able to.
And then of course, even when they do remove the marker, I may have to pay post office the £25 fee that I should be exempt from, although DVLA state, and I quote, I "should be able to get that reimbursed".
All very frustrating, especially when they very people who are supposed to know what they're doing, are all telling me different things. If they don't know, how I am supposed to have a scoopie doo?!0 -

I think tats what I plan on doing to be honest. It appears to be my best option with no one knowing their !!! from their elbows?! (Not you guys, but DVLA, VOSA etc).
I can't do anything though apparently until VOSA get off their butts and update DVLA on the status of my COMPLETED VIC. So the waiting continues 😤0 -
you certainly used to be able to get tax from a PO without having gone through VIC let alone having to wait for the maker to be lifted.
From memory, the only things lack of VIC prevented was issue of new logbook & issue of automated tax reminders, getting tax could be done provided you had the old logbook.
Might be worth a wander down to your local PO in the morning with your papers and see what happens0 -
Thanks Vaio. I think I will do...can't be sitting around waiting for them to pull their finger out.
That may well still be the case, so please don't listen to anything I've said lol. I'll be interested to see what the PO say tomorrow. Will update on here for anyone else who encounters this mish mash of information like I have.
Thanks for your help 0 -
UPDATE:
Just a quick update on how things worked out, for anyone else who may read this post in the future with the same question.
I was able to get my car tax from the post office, but I DID have to wait until VOSA had updated DVLA that my car had passed the Vehicle Identity Check (VIC). As soon as that showed on the DVLA records (which can be checked online yourself on their website and for me, took 48 hours), the post office are able to issue the car tax. Before then, however, the system would not have allowed them to apparently.
This was only possible, however, because I still had my V5C (logbook) in my possession (I.e. I had not handed it over to my insurers previously).
Hope this helps someone in the future, because if you have the same experience as me, VOSA and DVLA will just send you round in circles trying to get an accurate answer.
Hope this helps

Moons ago I had to do the VIC thing. Got the pass certificate and also got told to send it off to the doovla. Pointless really as VOSA still update them so in fact the government is basically trying to force you to do something for nothing - why i have no idea. I can only assume that this is to trigger the DVLA into sending you a new V5 with the cat C status on it so that you don't 'mistakenly' sell it as a normal car. Fact is the DVLA could still do this automatically if they wanted though admittedly that could potentially mean two log books floating around.
I took the V5 to the PO and got the tax with no hassle.
As for the V5 you'll need to get a replacement somehow. We (like you) still have the original V5 from before the prang and the DVLA sent us a nice new one when doing the blue to red V5 swapping thing.0 -

Yeah that's what I did too, just took the old V5 that I still have to the PO and got the tax issued.
You say about needing to get the V5 replacement. Am I right in thinking there is no rush to do that? I have no plans to sell the car, if I even ever do tbh (will more likely scrap after I'm finished with it).
Like you, I also see it pointless if VOSA update DVLA anyway. It's free so I'm not bothered either way, but if I don't have to, I won't bother. Although not sure how that works if I got pulled over and asked to produce...is that asking for trouble?0
