Ireland

The big one, the republic, are there nice cheap properties over in emerald isle? Or are they all over inflated ex council houses like here? Would the queen come after me for moving over there, are the english welcome?

I have romantic visions of cheap modern buildings with lots of green scenery.

My gfs family are from there in a place called Westport.

House prices arnt bad but i remember buying a bottle of something in a club and by a bottle i mean the size of a bottle of bud not a litre bottle and it came to 10 euros. Even in the tesco they had it wasnt much better.

I think the queen has a new great grandchild to be babysitting now, i think shes too busy to run over to ireland to chase you.

It was lovely, the people there were friendly but it was about as far away from the border as you can get. I suspect the closer you get to the border the less appealing the English are.

I dont think i could live there but it was very very nice.

  • Welllllll...first and foremost...its THEIR country...not yours.

"When in Rome...do as the Romans do". IF you are prepared to accept that its THEIR country and YOU are the one who has to fit in with them...then maybe. If you aren't...forget it.....

    Fair 'nuff imo.

Things ARE very different (yep....VERY...in different parts of Britain). IF they like you that's one thing....if they don't.......)......

...and be aware......VERY VERY aware that Britain might "split apart at the seams" at some point in the not too distant future. Make up your mind where you stand on that point......is your choice to risk poor/I mean POOR but British.....or ????????

Each to their own on that one....but DO be aware/very aware the U.K. is at high risk of splitting up in our lifetime. You pays your money and you takes your choice on that one as to whether you think it is a possibility on the one hand and what your personal view is on priorities if that happens on the other hand....

There are a lot of different factors to weigh up....and don't forget it....its not just down to the "financial" ones...and the main one is to never ever forget it is THEIR country...not yours....YOU will be the one expected to fit in. Nothing will be said if you don't try...but it IS the best idea by far to try...

They are entitled to feel that way.

How is Britain going to split up? Wales is perfectly happy, NI seems to be happy. Its only Scotland that wants to leave.

I'm half Irish and visit family in Eire regularly. I agree with the 06.01 post by ACG, it's a lovely place with welcoming friendly people.

The cost of living is high, they took a bad hit in the recession. I don't know if housing has slumped in price. I know there are unfinished properties scattered around after builders went bust so there may be bargains to be had. I'd look at online estate agents to get an indication of prices

Ireland is brilliant, but their economy is still in a pretty poor state (from where I'm sitting it looks even worse than the UK), so unless you have independent means to support yourself it's probably not a good time to go looking for a job or welfare support, even if you could find a cheap house.

What?! Clearly N.Irish news doesn't make it to England.

Happiness is one thing, but the huge subsidies from those arrogant people over the border are darned useful nonetheless! ;)

How would any break up of the UK have down-sides for Eire? I don't get it.
