Redundancy, insurance and SMP

Hi
I was made redundant last year during my maternity leave so have been paid SMP as a lump sum in with my redundancy settlement. I have insurance on my mortgage but my application was rejected on the basis that I haven't signed on.
Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions? My mortgage is £1300 a month so SMP of £136 a week doesn't go near it.
Thanks in advance.

How were you planning to pay your mortgage if you were still employed and on maternity leave?0 -
Additional maternity pay, which I've lost with my redundancy, KIT days and savings. I was intending to return to work before the end of the SMP period so could easily afford my mortgage.
Its not affordability that is an issue. Its that I've paid for an insurance policy for redundancy and can't make a claim following redundancy because I am on SMP until my baby is 39 weeks old. I mentioned the amount to highlight the difference between the incomings and outgoings.0
