Ford Fiesta Mk V 1400cc, bonnet release

Perhaps somebody could suggest a tip to open a Fiesta MkV 1400 bonnet. It's not the primary release which works fine, but the safety catch which won't undo, as the cable came away when we pulled it (looks like it was a botch repair). I can fit my hand underneath the bonnet but can't really see anything so not sure of where to push or pull
Any advice?
