G_G, nothing is certain yet, it's just being discussed, so it isn't really helpful at the moment in regards to this thread, as it's nothing more than scaremongering at the moment. And students don't get housing benefit anyway.

If you read my post clearly, I did state if and when it comes into force.

And by the time if it does come into force, the op might not be a student then.

same applies to the OP, time it does come in, if it does, the OP will be 25 anyway, as the earliest it can come in is after 2015, then probably another year so 2016, time it goes through parliament.

I did read it clearly, thank you and I know youbdid but as I said there doesn't seem much point dragging a big "what if" into the OPs already stressful dilemma.

But as sniggings has just pointed out even IF it is put into action the OP will be 25 by then anyway..... And hopefully be well into their degree course!

he knows that, it's the time before he starts uni he is worried about, doing a foundation course before the degree.

No he's worried about doing an Access course before starting uni....Access courses aren't funded by SF-although you may have inadvertently found a solution with your misunderstanding as Foundation degrees DO attract full student finance just like a degree does.

OP in your situation a foundation degree switching later to a full degree might be an option for you.

  • I did a f/t Access course a few years ago now. As far as I am aware the exclusion for f/t students receiving HB only applies to Higher Education. Access courses are classed as Further Education as they are level 2 and 3 or equivalent to GCSE and A-level. I know when I did mine, there were several people who were on a low income and received HB whilst studying full time. Maybe worth ringing up your local council and making sure they understand the difference between f/t at Further Ed level and Higher Ed level. My understanding of it is that as a Higher Ed student receives loans and grants towards living costs they are not entitled to HB. A Further Ed student does not receive student finance at all, except for any hardship funds they may apply to. Don't forget that whilst you are a f/t student, both at Further and Higher level you are eligible for a Council Tax reduction. I got this for the full four years - during my Access course and my degree.

Good luck and hope you manage to do it. Best thing I ever did. Just got to find my dream job now!
