Need to obtain proof of purchase of item bought with Debit Card

Not quite sure where to post this but will start here.

Last autumn I bought a runners' training aid for for my son who lives in New York, as a birthday present. (The item is made in the UK and sold internationally. Amazon in the USA was temporarily out of stock, so he asked me to buy him one here and send it.)

I sent it to him in its original packaging. There did not seem to be any warranty form supplied with it just instructions.

It has now broken down and he has approached the US agent for a replacement under warranty which they said they will provide if he supplies proof of purchase. As it is available internationally they will accept a UK proof. I think I sent him this at the time but he must have misplaced it. .

I purchased the item from my local John Lewis store using my debit card, and it appears on my bank statement on the day and with the relevant amount. However because it was a Barclays debit card purchase (not Barclaycard) all that shows on my statement is a entry "Card Payment to John Lewis" with date and amount. There is no individual transaction description or reference number provided.

I need to obtain proof that I purchased the item - should I approach John Lewis or Barclays?. Anyone had this problem?

Barclays won't know what you purchased.

Barclay's won't be able to help further. You could try John Lewis to see if they can identify your transaction and provide something, but you may be unsuccessful.
  • I reckon John Lewis is your best bet. They should be able to check their historical records. It's just a question of how much time and effort they are willing to put in. It may be just a case of doing an electronic search which might take a few seconds.

Barclays will know where and when but they won't know what.

Edit: Must learn to type faster. :)

Sorry not making myself clear- I am not expecting Barclays to record the name of the item I bought but I would have expected the purchase to have some sort of unique transaction reference number on my bank statement.

For example when I buy something with my Barclaycard it appears on my bank statement with a transaction reference number. When I buy something with my Barclays debit card, all it shows is the date, the name of the store I bought it from and the amount. No reference number.

Is there really no way of tracking it back - John Lewis's IT systems must reconcile their accounts with Barclays with individual reference number against the purchases. Everone else provides purchase/sale numbers Barclaycard, Amazon, Paypal, Ebay etc.

On my Barclays statement all it says is Card Payment and the name of the shop and amount. Seems a bit daft to have no electronic trail and expect you to keep the paper receipts when they are encouraging you to move towards a paperless society.
  • As others have posted try John Lewis first.
