Stripping paint off a bass guitar

I'm restoring a bass guitar which some 'artist' decided to paint snot green. I'm trying to get the paint off but it's a thick gloss paint painted onto black gloss and I want to get it down to bare wood so I can totally repaint it.. have tried white spirit and a paint scraper with little success.... any ideas what the best thing to do is?
