Kindle Fire HD question

Apologies if this is in the wrong place but I wonder if anyone could help me with a question about a kindle? I bought my mum a kindle fire HD and was trying to show her how to use it/navigate the different pages etc. However, after I had downloaded her a book and got her onto the first page, we couldn't get back to the home screen? There was a counter at the bottom of the screen saying "5 mins on this page" (or something like that) but the book page was full screen and I couldn't seem to get out of it. Even when I pressed the power button (I presume ts puts it into sleep mode or something) and then pressed the power utton again, it took me straight back into the book?

Is there a way of coming out of the book without powering off completely?

You should just "tap" the middle of the screen and then the house icon (bottom left) should appear.

Yes, just tap the screen and it brings up the icons.

The Kindle Fire's are lovely bits of kit. Just a shame they are so tied into Amazon (even though that can be sorted with waaaaay too much messing around)
