Backing Up to WD My Passport

Hi
I have just bought a WD external hard drive in order to back up photos and other documents etc.
I am using the software that came installed on the ext HD to do this.
I sort of thought that the back up would keep my computer files on my internal drive and the external drive in sync - i.e. if I deleted a photo from my desktop HD it would do the same the next time I backed up.
However, evidently not and anything that is backed up remains on the ext HD.
Is there any sort of free software I can use to sync in this way?
Thanks
Wizzer

when syncing goes wrong or if you get infected with a worm, you can lose the master and the backup, suggest a 3rd copy of important data on dvd too, and the use of disk imaging software for backup. http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx!!
