There's no guarantee they'll automatically try to re-take it.

You should call them first thing tomorrow and explain. Ask them then what the procedure is.

In the meantime - don't worry - it's a single late payment, they aren't going to bankrupt you over it.
  • Cheers, we rang Halifax and got someone in outer mumbia I think !!! Who asked 11 times for our postcode!! we weren't holding much hope at this point !! He said he couldn't take payment over the phone as he didn't have the facilities to do this. So we went to our local branch, who had said to sit tight and wait for the letter to come through the post, we wanted to pay it there and then, but they said we were being over cautious, why ?

You could end up paying the bill twice. Sometimes failed Direct debits are taken again automatically. Let the bank go through it's normal processes.

When I worked at the Halifax, if a mortgage DD was returned unpaid due to lack of funds, the request for payment would be tried again within a couple of days.

I know all their mortgage systems have changed since I worked there, but, personally I'd allow until this time next week to have another go at it (and make sure there was enough money in my account of course!)

    Probably Sheffield.

They don't have overseas call centres.

Unless you count Belfast as overseas.

Your DD wasn't 'returned' for being £30 short, but rejected by your own bank for not having sufficient funds available when the debit was presented. The originator is not told the reason for the refusal, but can probably guess.

Your own bank will then charge you an additional amount for the rejection - see their price list, and the mortgage co may additionally charge extra. See their T&C's.
