Running advice please!

I can run 5km quite comfortably... I fancy a challenge for this year in the shape of a 10km run. I have seen one on the first week March. I'm worried this is too soon. I am fully committed and really want to achieve this but is it too quick to go from 5km to 10km in 8 weeks?
Any advice from more experienced runners would be well received!

My boyfriend is a fairly serious runner and his training plans usually increase mileage by 10% per week in the lead up to long races -but his starting point is a lot higher (does half marathons and marathons). For friends starting out he usually says if you're doing less than 10k a week then it's ok to do bigger increments.

    hello,
i run 5k every night after work and can now do it in about 25mins, if i push i can do 22 and i am nearly 50.
i fancied doing a 10k last year and after some research the best one appeared to be the lincoln 10k.
the route is very flat so a good one to start with, however you may be miles from lincoln.
the step up to 10k as a one off is not that great to be honest and you will manage it easily.
whats the worst that can happen, you may have to walk for a while.
    have a go.

  • 10k's attract alot of different types of runners, one of the best 10ks i've done is the City of Salford 10k, it attracted elite, club and fun runners, between now and your run just build up gradually in the weeks to your 10k from 5k which you know you can do, 2/3 times a week would be suffice and you should easily get in under 60min!

  • Isn't there a 5k to 10k program similar to Couch to 5k?

  • HBS,

There lots of training plans out there......... you have them in forms of APP's on your phones, websites, books.....

one worth a look is the Run Britain website with is run by UK Athletics and offers rankings, races, advice and training plans.....
  • It's not for me. See the OP :) I did Couch to 5k and all it did was consolidate how much I hate running.

Have a look at Bridge to 10k. It follows on from couch to 5k and lasts about 8 weeks. You should be fine. Even if you don't make it quite up to 10k in training, just being in a race will give you that extra little boost to get you around.

Personally, I'd say if you can run 5k without too much trouble, you'll be able to do 10k easily within a few weeks. You'll be fine. I went from not having run for years to 20 minutes of running, then 30, then 45 then BANG I was doing 10k without any trouble. I even smoked back then!
