whole house condensation control

Hi. This is my first post so I hope I do this right.

I have terrible damp/condensation in my house and have been quoted £680 to supply and fit a homedry positive ventilation system to sort this out.

I have done some research and can buy the unit myself for £274 online but I presume I would then need to get a quote from an electrician to fit it as under installation information it states it needs a single electrical connection. Do you think this would be more cost effective?

Alternatively the lofty remcon whole house ventilation system requires diy only fit installation and costs £399 and so looks as though I could do it myself.

Does anyone know any pros or cons for each of these? Times are hard so if I could save money doing it myself then that's preferable but if the quote seems reasonable for the job I'm tempted to get the professionals in to make sure it's done properly.

Thank you in advance for any help

  • Hi, I have a similar problem.I have spent the last two weeks looking at various systems.I have had a damp proofer look at walls and he says its condensation.Proper ventilation is needed. If you look into causes of condensation and modern living, you will be quite surprised how many litres of water we put into the air every day, just by cooking, drying clothes indoors, boiling the kettle, etc and breathing. There seems to be a number of things you can do.
You can keep the temp in problem rooms above 12 degrees at all times.
    You can stop breathing
    You can stop cooking
You can stop drying clothes indoors
    Yeah right.

I first looked at the envirovent system but seemed quite expensive.
I looked at reviews and guarantees of other products and eventually shortlisted to two.

The lofty remcon around £400 has 99 speeds, so can be finely tuned to suit your premises. It is remote controlled so no need to jump up attic to get right setting.

The other is Nuaire Drimaster, around £230 with a proven track record.I originally looked into the Heat model but other sites dont recommend systems with heat,I see good reviews for the Drimaster 2000 which has a separete sensor for intelligent heat recovery.

If you are a below average diyer you could install any of these yourself. However you may need to consult an electrician regarding connection to electrical supply, which can be spurred off the lighting circuit.

Obviously the pro's are cleaner air and little or no condensation and no mould. Also dry air is easier to heat than humid air so you should see savings on heating costs.

The cons, well the only thing I have heard is that you may feel a draught below the ceiling louvre.

I am certainly contemplating installing one at home, I have condensation in one of the bedrooms. I am definitely installing one in the rental property, so dont have to rely on tenant to open windows or use extractor fans properly.

I may fit the lofty at home and the drimaster at rental property so that I can compare results.
  • Sorry to post a reply but I couldn't find the 'Post New Thread Button'.

I am having difficulties with condensation, humidity and mould in my home. I have been using 2 dehumidifiers for about a year and they are working hard. This is costing me a lot to run them.

What are the best heat recovery systems and how much would i pay for one to be installed in my loft. This system would just service the upstairs rooms.

I have been looking at the Maico WS 170.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thought I'd mention that I use to have terrible condensation / damp / mould issues in my last home. £230 for a drimaster off amazon and fitted by an electrician (for a further £100 - took him 2 hours). Really they are fantastic things - only cost around 1-2p per day to run, are silent and really do completely remove the problem (as well as taking filtering the air in the house with allergies such as pollen). I've just moved into a new house and it was one of the first things we fitted
