Cleaning throttle body?

Is there anything you can put in the petrol tank that will clean the throttle valve on the engine. Have a 2009 Focus and sometimes the throttle struggles when idle. Im thinking that there maybe a build up of crap in the throttle body.

I have used that Redex stuff before on other cars ive had but I was hoping that there was some special liquid you can buy specially for this throttle job.

A mate said there was some liquid that was German but could not remember the name of it.

Open the bonnet, remove the air intake from the throttle body, spray the butterfly valve with WD40 (take extreme care not to drop anything in there) and reassemble.

Shoving stuff in the fuel tank is utterly pointless. It has a better chance of dislodging something in the fuel line and then blocking a fuel injector, than it has of fixing anything.

BUT, your issue sounds like the idle control valve, WHICH is different but easier to clean...... Remove it from the car, clean with a WD40 soaked rag.
I think Ford use the term Idle Intake Control or IAC.

  • I'm no expert on this subject but I would have thought something like Intake and Carb cleaner would be a better choice for this job than WD40?

DEFINITELY. Get a can of carb cleaner. It's intended for precisely this job. WD40 is for dispersing water.

A number of old carb manufacturers recommend WD40 as carb cleaner.

When I say that, I do not say it lightly...... WD40 gets used for all the wrong things, it's a solvent, a degreaser, not a lubricant.

We're not actually talking about carbs anyway, we're talking about throttle bodies and ICV's, the penetrating properties of WD40 are what we need to get in there and remove any gunk/corrosion.

Still waiting for those carb manufacturer recommendations... Are you, p'raps, thinking of WD40's own marketing suggestion that it can be used to clean lawn mower carbs? (along with just about everything this side of curing warts)

Indeed we are. Which, you have to admit, are very similar environments to the airways of a carb upstream of where the jets atomise the fuel.

Have to agree, I would rather use the correct stuff - it's not as if it costs a fortune to get, its only a few quid a tin. I did the throttle body on my Zaffy, took it off - sat for 10mins with a toothbrush and a tin of cleaner - really noticed the difference when I stuck it back on.

Also worth pointing out the real possibility of poisoning the catalytic converter with wd40.
Don't know what its chemical make up consists of, but it is a lubricant and not designed to be passed through an intake .
correct stuff for correct job, a tin or air intake cleaner is probably around the same price as wd40.
If it isn't broken, don't try to fix it.

"The long-term active ingredient is a non-volatile, viscous oil which remains on the surface, providing lubrication and protection from moisture. This is diluted with a volatile hydrocarbon to give a low viscosity fluid which can be sprayed and thus penetrate crevices. The volatile hydrocarbon then evaporates, leaving the oil behind"
    but it is a lubricant

    Water Dispersant...
