Avast stopped working

Please can someone help. I had problem restarting my computer and it actually worked through quick restart fix. Now the Avast is not working despite the fact that I still have 1 year free licence downloaded in November 2013. On the corner where Avast sign is when I press the sign it's showing as "Unprotected". When I press "fix now" it does not work, when I press "start" it's not working too. I have asked for a new licence key to be send to a new e-mail address but when I insert it - nothing changes. I found that there is a new Avast 2014. I am thinking is that because I probably did not update it but when I press "update" nothing changes. Please help!

I think that I would run an online virus scan, download a fresh copy of Avast. Uninstall the existing version. Install the downloaded copy and see if that works.
Not running Windows 8 by any chance?
Others may have better ideas.That gum you like is coming back in style.0
