Do make sure you also immediately reply to Athena as per post #2 as well, because I have visions of a POPLA code already issued which MAY still be in play if you get it quickly. Or you could phone Athena (being careful not to discuss payment nor who was driving or anything else!) and just ask them to fax or email the rejection letter and tell you your POPLA code by email or over the phone if they reckon they've already sent one. INSIST.

  • Thanks. I didn't realise a POPLA code had an expiry. I've emailed them already and will give them a call on Monday afternoon if they haven't replied.

they most definitely have an expiry and after that things get more difficult for you

its important to get a popla code, its then important to check it for authenticity and have your appeal in with popla within the 28 days following the code , so as early as possible , not late , not in the post, never miss that deadline !! PERIOD

they (popla) reopen tomorrow so get checking asap
  • Should I call Athena about the Popla code or Popla themselves? Or both?

parking companies give out popla codes , not popla, so call the parking company, popla wont know about it until you submit a popla appeal to them yourself (after athena give you the popla code - if they do)

You can't call POPLA. They don't know who you are from Adam (sorry but I thought that was obvious, you haven't appealed to POPLA yet so why ring them?).

  • I don't know anything about appealing parking charges so I have no idea how it works. This is all new to me. Until the day before yesterday, I was hoping that the charge had been cancelled as I hadn't heard anything for so long. I didn't even know what a POPLA code was!

I had a call from Lidls customer services today and they wanted some further details of the charge. But I then called Athena to get my POPLA code and she put me on hold and then told came back and told me that she can't give this information over the phone and that I need to email. I said I had already emailed but hadn't heard back so she said to email again which I've done. Does that sound right that they can't give you the POPLA code over the phone? She said they don't have that information.
  • Ooh just got an email. Parking charge has been cancelled! Result! Thanks for all your help with this. I would have been £45 down if it wasn't for you.

    Glad its sorted

But of course it never needed paying in the first place:)

Well done - sounds like it was Lidl taking down the details and telling Athena to butt out! I have added your success here in post #2 of the complaints sticky thread:

Amazing what MSEers can achieve from scratch! Now you can spread the word on how to beat this all-too-common scam, like we all do. POPLA or complaints (or both!).
