For anyone who has a mobility scooter, do you have insurance for it and, if so, how much do you pay a year, and who is it with, please

Depends on the scooter value and what cover you require.
You can get cover for 3rd party damages, Or theft and breakdown etc.
If it breaksdown you call them and they recover it home. I found the cheaper ones tended to leave you to arrange that and pay for it and refund you later.
FIL uses PremierCare. Costs more but no messing around come claim time. (hopefully)Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Thanks.
Scooter is at the higher end, value wise. Given where we live [high crime area], I would like to insure against theft, damage as well as breakdown.

Hello
My first post here so please be gentle
I have had scooter insurance for a few years now.. please check the small print
Most of my policies have had a time limit stating the scooter can only be left an hour unnattended when out somewhere, after this if it is stolen they won't pay out. Not ideal if you have scooted somewhere for lunch and gone inside.
This included being left outside at home.. so if i wasn't well enough to put scooter away in locked shed straightaway it was at risk..
I have had policies from Fish and premier care
I used my scooter on the road so felt it was only right to be insured in case i screwed up.
My wheelchair that i am always sat in is not insured.. i feel there is little chance of it being stolen. Ideally i'd like this insured too but i can't afford it.
Do check with your house insurance incase there is an add on for property away from the home.. that would help with theft but not liability.
good luck0 -

Thank you for your advice
I will contact my house insurance company to see what they can offer. I am able to use my scooter on the road, as well, so would like to be insured.
I do have liability on my contents insurance but think that items away from the home wouldn't currently cover the cost of the scooter if it was damaged or stolen. There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you - Beatrix Potter0 -
While I sympathise with the reasons why many of the above posters need to use the scooter, I find it amazing the comments seem to all revolve around the cost of the scooter being stolen, damaged or breaking down. Little about the potential injury to a pedestrian from the use of the scooter.
There is no legal requirement to insure that type of scooter.
Note that sometimes the landlord of a block of flats can require third party insurance if a mobility scooter is used in the common areas of the property.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
Fish. That rings a bell.. I think if the scooter brokedown you arranged your own recovery/repair and then claimed the money back.
Not much good if its 6:30am and your halfway to the papershop and it stops dead. FIL had that happen.
Who do you call. How do you get to a phone?
Correct no legal requirement to have one. The accidental damage/injury is the main reason why my FIL took insurance.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

I appreciate your comment.. i did say about road insurance 'incase i screwed up' and sort of include all accidents in that but wasn't clear.
I know there are some hideous examples of scooter use in public places but I am very aware my scooter is a beast and always give way to 'walkers/dogs etc' on paths and move onto road if path is busy e.g. if i've mistimed a trip and am out at school rush hour. My road scooter is not suitable for shopping areas as it's designed for going on fields so i can 'walk the dog' which reduces liklihood of me injuring someone.
Part of me thinks bikes aren't always insured, prams and puschairs etc but yes their potential to do damage is less thank a bulky scooter. I would hope that scooters are going slow enough on paths (speed limit 4mph) and the driver is aware enough and pedestrians that collisons don't occur., but do realise they must happen at times
I would need to check my house insurance which has some 'public liability' in it to see if i'm covered if i run over someone's toes in my wheelchair or knock into them.0 -
Speaking from memory here, so would have to double check, but I think when we looked into this in the past, house insurance would not cover any scooter that could be used on roads.
We had Premier Care 'Public Liability only' insurance for our scooter.0 -

My home insurance already covers any injury or damage I may cause to another person or their property, hence why I was asking with regards theft, etc.
Having spoken to my insurance provider, they won't ensure for road use but would if it was only used on the pavements. I know there is no legal requirement but, having spent a lot of money, it is something I am keen to have. There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story.
