Ryanair credit card charge for debit card

I accidentally selected "Visa" rather than "Visa Debit" when booking with a debit cars and got charged a credit card fee.
Before anyone tells me that is my mistake, it is my understanding that since i didn't use a credit card, I wasn't eligible to receive their credit card charge and therefore the fee should be refunded. They are refusing to refund.
Do I have any comeback or do I have to accept it? It would seem that if I was charged for something I wasn't eligible for (PPI when I was a non-working student?) the charge should be refunded?
On a seperate note, they can recognise if you are using debit or credit and so are very cheeky to inform you when you are using a credit card but select debit, but don't do the reverse. Will let you know if you owe then, but happy to let you accidentally pay them extra.
EDIT: Ryanair agreed to refund on the basis that since I used a debit card, they should not have applied a fee for a service they knew I wasn't eligible to receive.
For those that make the same mistake and resent Ryanair's attempt to grab money at every corner, I hope you find this information useful.

What did they say when you spoke to them?Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0

I chose the wrong option and therefore was charged the fee, which is now non-refundable.0

Well they would, wouldn't they?Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

What else do you want people to tell you? It *was* your mistake. Chalk it up to experience and be more careful next time. CC fee is only about 2% so it can't be massive amounts of money you've lost.
It's the principle. They have a system in place where they allow people to make mistakes at their own cost but never at Ryan Air's. I work in the payments industry and they know a debit card is being used, so why process it as a credit card?
Furthermore, I don't believe it is legal to sell someone a service which they are not eligible to receive, which is what I am seeking confirmation of here. Anyone?0 -
Principle or not, it's nobody's fault but your own that you chose the wrong payment type.0

Does this happen on other websites?
Or is this just another profit move for Ryanair?0 -

Thanks. Very helpful.marsman802 wrote: »Does this happen on other websites?

Cashing in on an unclear booking system. They don't have a "Visa Credit" option as other sites do, just plain "Visa", thus catching people out and charging them.0 -

Good lord, you're really grasping at straws now. The only relevant question is this: Are you going to take them to small claims court over £10? If not, put it behind you and be more careful next time. Not everything is a great conspiracy to defraud you.0 -

The principal seems ridiculous after speaking with wife today (she lists this airline as her customer in the payments industry).
There is absolutely no need to select the card type as the numbers identify that. It's purely a coding issue - so you are made to choose your card type even though u don't need to.
I order my takeaways and pay over phone and they never ask my card type.
But I would like to know if other airlines work the same way.0
