Should I appeal a PCN I feel was unfairly issued?

On New Year's Day I returned to my car to find a PCN had been put on my windscreen. I have parked my car in exactly the same spot many times and have never had a PCN before. I am very confused as to why I have been issued a PCN on this occasion. I feel strongly that this PCN has been unfairly issued as the reason for its issue is not correct. On the PCN (which was issued by the council) it says that the following contravention has occurred-
12- Parked in a residents' or shared use parking place or zone without clearly displaying either a permit or voucher or pay and display ticket issued for place.
The location in which my car was parked is a quiet residential area, it was not on the road, my car was fully mounted on a large section of the pavement. I do have pictures but am unable to include them in my post so explaining where I parked is quite difficult, there were no signs that said no parking, nowhere for me to buy a ticket to park, I was not parked in a resident or permit area as my car was off the road, I was not restricting or blocking anyone and there was more than enough room for people to pass if they were walking on the pavement! I would appreciate any advice/guidance with regards to my post and I thank you in advance.

The best place for advice is the council parking section at www.pepipoo.com. They will be able to give you good advice on how to approach this."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"
