Crafting space saving ideas

We have a walk in cupboard at the top of our stairs which i have decided to use as my new crafting cubby hole. The hubby has just ordered me a new desk, chair and some crafting bits (rotary cutter, self healing cutting mat, steel ruler etc so I can take my sewing more serious) fr my birthday
I will mainly use this for sewing, but also other crafts which I do/try out such as decoupage, painting wooden signs, etc. and I'm thinking of space saving ideas to store my stash.

The cupboard is quite long but only 90cms wide. The width is pretty much taken up by my new desk so need ideas that can make the most of my walls. I have thought of a couple of shelves with jar lids screwed underneath and teh jars filled with buttons, ribbons etc. also I. Am going to look into making some sort of hanging magazine rail for my crafting mags.

Unfortunately I share the room with the Hoover, which will be taken out when I'm crafting and put back again when I've finished so no floor is available.

Can you think of anything else?

Have you got a window in there for a natural light source if not a daylight lamp might be useful. I've got a small window where I craft but still love the DL for dull days or evenings.

If you try googling images or looking on pinterest for 'narrow craft rooms' you might get you some ideas you can use. I like these two, the narrow shelves look good and should hold a lot of things like buttons in jars etc. In the first picture I like the use of the bars to hang ribbon on, I've seen metal bars like that at Ikea and you can get hooks or bins to hang on them. Another idea would be to get some of that slatted paneling like you see in shops and you can hang bins or hooks on it to put your stuff in and it would be moveable to change as you need.

There's no window, but the hubby is going to sort me out a light in there. I also have a bendable extendable lamp which dh is going to attach to the wall so I can use it as a spot light on whatever I'm working on.

Love the idea of the metal bars, I actually have some extendable bars from a broken shoe storage unit in the attic so I guess I could use the them if I get some on the hanging thingys!

I love that first pic, it looks a really nice craft area. Could I ask where the pic is from as I'd like to see if it gives the size of it.

    Thanks for your helpful reply!

  • The wall rails are Ikea Bygel. If you search for this you will find loads of images showing how they have been used and for what.

  • These might not all be appropriate for your space, but some will be useful so i'll share all my tricks.

Instead of thinking of adding rails only to the walls, use your furniture. Backs of main doors, insides of cupboard doors and even the sides on desks and bookcases. If you can't attach rails, you can still use cup hooks to hang items up, or sew your own orgaqnisers with lots of pockets to attach instead :)

Vacuum bags. They'll shrink the storage space needed for fabrics. You can pack away by cloth type, or project use. (cotton bag/man made bag/scrap bag or clothing/craft/scrap/pretty.) Your cloth will be protected from bugs, household smells, unfortunate accidents and the jealous drooling of likeminded friends.

If there's some ceiling space and it won't block too much light, run a washing line up at a height where you can climb upto it safely, and use some of the fresh air up ;). Keep a list of items hung up there, who they were made for etc, then retrieve as required. (really good if you're trying to make inventory items for stalls or fairs)

Corkboards on patches of spare wall, then pin up supplies or small equipment etc. You can pin all kinds of items - either by pinning through the item (zips will cope!) or by putting in a resealable bag and pinning that. I even have a board for finished jewellery pieces where they're bagged and labelled for fairs - I'll have ten pairs of earrings individually packed then clipped together with a bulldog clip to hang from a push pin.

  • Dexion, shelving at the short end of your cubby hole and think about the fact that it will get hot in there!! So some sort of cooling system (not a fan!!) One person can generate over 100 watts of heat per quarter hour and if you are having a light as well and if there is nowhere for the heat to escape it will get very hot and sticky!!
