Staysure Security Breach

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-25591548
Staysure Security Breached.
My parents recieved a letter telling them about this breach offering "free" credit monitoring for 6 months.
This smacked of them profiteering from their mistake by getting customers a trail of a security product as opposed to offering compensation/ actual help. Doe anyone have recommendations?

Tell them to report the card they used as lost to the issuer. A new one with a new security code and expiry date will mean they are safe.

My credit card was used fraudulently (through Facebook) at the end of November but luckily my credit card provider picked it up and stopped the payment going through. I got the letter from Staysure a few weeks later telling me my details had possibly been compromised.

The letter seemed to suggest that Staysure hadn't encrypted the data stolen - I thought this wasn't allowed. I also find it shocking that companies are allowed to hold your credit card details for so long. I bought the holiday insurance in March 2012.

I didn't take up the credit monitoring offer from Staysure. I did wonder if it was opportunisitic of the credit monitoring company or if they were linked to Staysure in some way.
  • I also had my card used fraudulently in Australia in a restaurant for £2500. Fortunately my credit card company covered the fraudulent payment, but I think they should have stopped it before it was authorised. The offer of 6 months free Experian Data Patrol service does not compensate for their failure to safeguard are sensitive data, and I wonder if there is some claim through the FSA or who ever regulates insurance companies for the gross misconduct of Staysure resulting in a great deal of stress and worry to us the policy holders?Does anyone know if this is possible and how to go about it ?

You can cut out the stress if you simply "lose" the card as already posted in #2!

Not much point if it's already been used fraudulently! I assume the card has therefore already been replaced.
