I get sent on conferences etc once or twice a year and jump at the chance of using my own car. 40p/mile isn't as generous as it used to be, but for a 500 mile round trip it still leaves me with over a hundred quid in my back pocket after I've paid for petrol. Well worth the three ponds something I paid to add business use to my policy this year.

I suppose if I had a newer car I'd have to factor in depreciation and wear and tear, but on my 10 year old car I reckon those are negligible. And yes I suppose if I had an accident on my way it could end up costing me money, but that wouldn't put me off driving to a conference any more than it puts me off driving to Tesco.

At the company I work for, we have to arrange our own hire cars. However, we are only allowed to use one particular hire car company. That way my company gets a big discount. My company has agreed with the hire car company what insurance the car comes with. If I have an accident, my company picks up the bill.

It sounds like you should check what your company policy is on hiring cars. I would expect them to issue some guidance for you.

It would be unusual and unlikely!

My employer used to cover employee vehicles for use on business, although there were limits on our travel policy so you had to hire if the use was over X miles.

They then withdrew that cover and nobody uses their car any more, so far more cars are hired or taxis used instead.

Company insurance covers most hire cars too (we decline all insurance with our chosen provider unless we are in the US).
