Who notifies the SLC?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.
My son graduated from University last summer and was within the cohort who escaped the eyewatering increase in tuition fees (so paying c.£3500 per year).
He has been fortunate enough to secure a job paying c.£22k pa and will therefore be paying back his loan.
My question is probably a stupid one, but will the HMRC notify the SLC to start the payments or does he need to do so himself? I'd thought (wrongly) that it automatically triggered on his earnings, but he has not had a deduction from salary. He is saving 30% of his salary, but clearly would rather not end up having to pay a huge whack in arrears if he should have been the one to do the notification.
(ETA..just seen that the deductions won't start until April, but do we need to notify or will they just 'know'?)
Thank you in advance.

You start paying back from April the year after you graduated. So if he graduated this year, he will start paying back from April.
HMRC and SLC will talk to each other so just wait to see if he deductions start from April pay. (he should have filled in a P46 with his new job which has a "Student Loans" tick box)0 -
He doesn't need to tick the box until after April. The box asks about loans already in repayment. HMRC should start deductions in April automatically. He will receive a letter in the next couple of months telling him that deductions will start.Sealed Pot Challenge #239

My deductions started automatically, they sent me a letter in the March after graduation telling me that my earnings would trigger payments as of April, and then it just came out on my payslip as of my first one after 1st April.
If they don't start automatically, he should follow up with the SLC.
Well done him for a finding a job so quickly in this market!DEBT FREE 3rd Sept 2011
