Any card reader will work providing your phone has USB OTG support, although you will probably need a separate power supply for the card reader.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

I would transfer the pictures from the sd card onto a pc and then connect the Galaxy S to the pc with a usb lead and transfer the pictures across that way.

The Galaxy S should appear on your pc in Windows Explorer as a separate device so you can copy and paste the pictures in bulk

Normally I go for cables and suchlike, but for sheer convenience I now use Airdroid.

You install the app on your phone (from Google Play), and then open web.airdroid.com on your comp.

This establishes a wireless connection to your phone. Not only can you browse and download photos from your phone, but also upload files (e.g. films). And browse through your phone's contents

Well worth it for sheer convenience. You can also use it remotely if you don't have your phone/tab on you, but it is on and connected to wifi - but you need to register to do that. The basic 'sitting in front of tab AND computer' interface does not require registering.

Sounds complex, but REALLY isn't - and is much easier to use than even a direct cable connection once set up.

I solved a similar issue for my sister this weekend. She has a camera with a full size SD card and wanted to transfer the photos to her Galaxy Tab, without using a PC.

I gave her a spare 16gig micro SD card and adapter. So, she uses that in the camera and when she wants to transfer to the tablet she removes the card and micro SD within, and plugs the latter into the tablet.

She'd ordered some expensive SD card that broadcasts wifi but that's overkill (and the card was only 4gig) so she's cancelled the order.

Smartphone are USB clients not hosts, other client devices (like a card reader) will not work, they need to be plugged into a host like a computer.

    Is that true?
Would you say that to a stranger's face in the street? No? Then why type it on a forum?

You could give airdroid a go, it works over your wifi.

I realise I didn't read the OP properly
Airdroid is great, but without a PC it is not useful

The 'perfect' solution (if it works) may be to use an OTG cable, a card reader and Nexus Media Importer

Follow the link for details. Unfortunately you r phone is not on the comapitible list, but it may work. An OTG cable is very cheap (amazon et al), and, for the app, remember you always have a trial period for any Google Play app - if it does not work, uninstall and get a refund.

I have this for my Nexus 7, and it will do exactly as you ask (as well as allow me to carry round a load of films on a USB stick instead of taking up internal memory...
