Bad Credit History - How Do I Resolve an outstanding issue from 2009?

Hi

I applied for credit for a new car - a novelty for me as I've never had a car that was actually mine!

I was contacted by the dealer to say my application for credit has been refused. I have checked my credit history using noddle.co.uk and it has shown an issue I thought had been resolved years ago.

In 2009 I upgraded my mobile phone and at the same time was offered a months trial of internet from a dongle. I took the free trial but I never used the dongle, as I knew at the time I could do without another thing to pay for each month. I sent the dongle back - but very stupidly I didn't realise I had to get a returns number - so Orange say they never received it back.

I was sent a bill a while later which I disputed - this went on for a long time - and each person I spoke to at Orange would tell me something different. At one point I was offered a deal - if I paid £90 they would close the issue. I said I wanted to get some advice from my Dad and I would call them back. I decided to take the offer but when I called back they said that nobody would have offered that deal to me!

Long story short my Dad sent them letters (I think he got the templates from MSE) and we had no further communication from them. I have since been approved for a mortgage with my husband and so I have never oven it anymore thought. I'm shocked to see on my credit report that I have apparently "defaulted" on this payment for 5 years!

Please please help, I don't know what I can do to correct this - any advice would be great

Many Thanks
MrsC

You could start the complaints process to get it removed, but can take ages.

It falls off your credit report 6 years from the default date, then its like it was never there.

If you got a mortgage with it, then its probably not worth the grief trying to get it removed, unless you think its going to cause you issues.

Also the compensation they might offer you directly could be less than the worth of the 0845 phone calls you make.
If it was me I would want it removed on principle even if it didn't have an impact.
