    Have you concluded the sale?
    This is a sign of older wiring- I would recommend a full EICR Electrical check by a competent time served electrician.

    You may have wiring that is a pig in a poke

    I used to work for Nottingham City Council, all the rewires we did were surface mounted, not once in 3 years there did we do a flush job.

    The wiring itself isn't surface mounted, only some of the sockets.
  • Could go for flat plate sockets...

    That would still leave the back box proud if the wall.

    Sounds like you have single to double socket conversions going on. If so, easy to convert to double flush.
