British Gas Bill Query

Having been with British Gas for over 6 years and with no problems, I have been left totally bewildered as to how I could have consumed the following in one month:

Electricity £71.30
Gas £41.67

Since I am duel fuel I am only using my electricity for the usual suspects and that includes one washing machine load per week. No heaters and hardly any oven use..........
In my statement both the gas and electricity fluctuate at the same time.

Electricity 16 days 138kw
Gas 16 days 12 kwh
Electricity 11 days 4 kwh
Gas 11 days 9kwh
Electricity 5 days 138kwh
Gas 5 days 27 kwh

As I stated earlier we are people of habit and the only thing that has increased in usage is the gas for heating and hot water......I have always been all electric and now have duel fuel as I have moved. I find the bill for electricity whilst having gas is 90% more in cost and is without any heating and no electric shower costs. Anybody willing to help

The 11 day figures are wrong, 4 kWh elec and 9 kWh gas over 11 days are virtually impossibly low. Who provided those figures ?

    Hi Molerat,

First of all thanks for your reply. It came straight from the "Horses website", my online account of my statement. I have been arguing that their website is all to France but I am the idiot according to the woman I spoke with. She says if these are the readings I have given (correct) then there is nothing wrong with the billing. I not only wrote the meter numbers down I photographed them so the reading I have given are correct. It is the 5 day period that I am worried about

Firstly, those readings for gas are meter units, not kWh. And the 11 day reading for electricity does seem to be incorrect. Over the whole period you are using about the national average.

Keep reading your meters (keep your own table) and see if that is correct (at 8 or 9 kWh per day you can take daily readings of electricity to check there is no problem.)

Look carefully at the photos of the meter you have. Are you sure there is not a misread?

If that is your usage then you are spending less than half of £71.30 each month - the other half is just a catch-up amount.

What I do not understand is how I can consume 138 Kwh in 16 days and then consume the exact same amount in 5 days, I did nothing extra nor did I start a baking marathon, In short, same appliances and same usage. Re the gas, yes Nada you are correct I should not have used KWh, I should have used units!

Assuming they are consecutive readings there must have been a misreading on the 11 day period, first 16 days 138 kWh, second 16 days (11+5) 142 kWh (138+4). The two 16 day periods are almost the same with an average 8.625 and 8.875 kWh daily.

you need to start reading your meters every 24 hours so you understand what you are using, as if you really think that you can use only 4kw in 11 days  then you don't stand a chance of understand what's going on.

I use 9 units a day and that is using the bare minimum.

This is the thing, I know that 4 kws over 11 days is impossible as my fridge freezer consumes 0.98 of a kw per day. So, this proves that there is something wrong somewhere but not with me. Just as I have my doubts on the 4 kws I have more doubts on the 138 kws used over 5 day period which is the exact same amount consumed over 16 days earlier that month. Since there have been no changes in my life (no baking/no electric heater) and the 5 day period matched the 16 monotous day period it is beyond me. Thanks for all replies
