    Evening all,

It's a bit of a longshot, I know, but does anyone keep track of how many times they win a prize compared to how many competitions they enter? Preferably someone who has won at least 1 prize - I don't want to depress myself here.

hmm... well, ive been comping for nearly two months, i enter about ten or more comps a day, and so far have only won a pair of train tickets, which have not been awarded to me yet! dont know if id actually get them to be honest, but its fun anyway!

It took me about 6 weeks to win my first prize and I was entering about 20-40 per day - I've gone through phases before of entering quite a few comps for a few days and won nothing. This time I've stuck at it, and hopefully my one win will soon be joined by others!

I only enter for things I want, and am particularly picky about the holidays as there are often lots of restrictions on dates etc.

Same here, took me 6 weeks, I won some coffee but I had just given up caffeine :rotfl: :D

Guess I'm lucky though, I seem to get a prize or a freebie on a weekly basis & I don't often visit the freebie board. :D

    Welcome to the forum mark.

There are 2 variables in the answer to your question. the number of comps you enter, and the number of entries in the individual comps. & I'm afraid its the latter that is most important. A couple of months back there was a holiday to South Africa which had just 6 (I think) entries (but it was fixed dates & other weird conditions) so very good odds if you met the entry conditions. Other comps, particularly for 'big' prizes have 10's of thousand of entries (e.g. a smart car comp for Premier Shops had over 15,000 entries).

So if you entered both these examples, you'd have a 1/6 and a 1/15,000 chance.

(Probablility wasn't my strong subject at school, but I do remember that if the odds of throwing a 6 on a dice is 1 in 6, it doesn't mean if you throw a dice 6 times you will definetly roll a 6 because there's a 5/6 chance each throw will not be a 6. Comps are like that as well, just because you enter thousands, it doesn't guarantee you will win, but the more you enter the better will be your chances of a win, just like the more times you roll a dice, the better the chances will be of rolling a 6, but with each roll there's a 5/6 chance of not winning.)

Most local comps (newspapers & radio) have fewer entries, tiebreakers also have fewer entries and can be a very enjoyable challenge.

In terms of the comps on this site, I don't even enter all the ones I find let alone all the ones on here. I only enter ones that I'd like for my family or myself which I reckon varies between about 500 - 750 comps a month and I have won roughly 1 prize a month.

Another way of looking at the odds are how many winners are on MSE. A few months back there was a comp with 1,000 prizes of either flowers or champagne from the London paper, where MSErs won 18 out of 1,000 prizes, and more recently, The Good German from ThisisLondon, where MSErs won 3 out of 100 books.

If you look at it as a money making scheme, its very unlikely to 'pay'. If you look on it as a hobby that has nice surprises every now & then, you'll enjoy it loads.

    Hope this helps.

Fingers Crossed for you George, what eveybody above has written is very true. Hang on in there, and don't let it get you down if you don't win anything for a while. Try to see it as a hobbie and enjoy the banter with the other people on here, there's lots of experienced compers here who will give you great advise and tips, and remember once you have won back the money for the cost of your internet charges, the comps are all free to enter, so there's nothing to loose. Best Of Luck :)

I must be the most impatient person in the universe so I'll apologise in advance for the next bit you read.

I've been entering comps for about, oooo, lets see now, 1 week and won nothing and I'm fed up already - the comps probably have'nt even closed yet :o :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...
