Default programs wont stay set!

The title says it all.
I've tried setting default programs to open images, videos and music using 'set your default programs' or 'associate a file type...' but they just wont stay set. It's not everytime but the default changes back after a reboot. It's not changing to another program either, it's going to the box that asks if you want to search on line or on your pc to find the correct software to open the file type.
Driving me nutz it is - any suggestions?
Is there anything I can do in the registry?
