tesco pay at pump

I bought £10 worth of petrol at a tesco petrol station. I selected pay at the pump before fuelling up and inserted my card. When I had finished, the machine told me that it was out of paper and couldn't give me a receipt (it should have told me before frankly) but that I could get one from any other pump. Most other pumps were in use but I went to one that was not being used. It also was out of paper. I gave up and left.
On checking my credit card statement I see that I have been charged £13. I contacted tescos customer service who told me to call in to the service station where I should be able to get a receipt. I don't wish to do that - it's 40 miles away. Tescos can't explain how it happened and are refusing to reimburse me.
There's no point kicking up a fuss over £3 but obviously in future I can't use the pay at the pump option. I shall have to go to the kiosk every time. Otherwise I could get charged £100 next time.

Was the petrol £1.30 a litre by any chance?
I use pay at the pump all the time and have never been overcharged. I have however read the wrong dial on many an occasion!0 -

Hmm, maybe that's what it was! I could have sworn I was looking at the right dial though.0 -
I never use pay at pump because they never have paper and I need receipts to claim fuel back. Im lucky if they have gloves for the diesel, thats pretty rare.0

It annoys me when there is no paper in the pay at pump machines - but I usually just go into the shop and ask for a receipt - defeats the purpose of pay-at-pump though35, semi retired, sun, sand, sea, life is good

It's too much for one of the attendants to get off their fat arris and refill them. Far easier to sit at the desk chatting to their colleagues.
Whilst Tesco pumps are often out of paper they could also fix their Clubcard scanners that work on 1 out of 100 pumps. The man without a signature.0 -
