Selling marital jewellery

Hello,
I've been having a clear out and came across my old wedding ring, engagement ring and 2 diamond necklaces. I have been divorced 2 years now and I won't ever wear it again, but feel a bit sad selling it. However the wedding ring is a platinum court band and the necklaces and other ring are white gold, and could use the money at this time of year. I have no idea about how to sell them on - would it be best to try local second hand jewellers or just sell them to one of those get cash quick places?
Any advice would be great.
Thanks

I took mine to a local jewellers. My marriage ended when my ex left me for someone else so I had no problem getting rid.
The one thing I was unsure of was what to spend the money on. I didn't want some kind of reminder lurking around so I used the money to take my children to centre parcs! What we have now are happy memories. X0 -
I think you should do what you want, if you need the money certainly sell them, maybe if you have a daughter she might like a memory from times when you and her father were happy, if not then move on.0

Thank you for your replies.
No we didn't have any children, so perhaps selling would be a good way to finish things.0 -
What about spending on a fab haircut and some high end makeup? Or even a pair of fabulous heels?
I.e. use it to fuel an exciting and fab new part of your life?0 -
The price of gold has dropped significantly - could you hang on a while to get a better return?:hello:0

I know I had a bracelet that was given to my MIL that she gave to me and tbh I hated it from the first moment I had it.
I kept it as I thought she may ask about it when she was alive and out of some misguided loyalty for years after she died. However last year I decided to sell it and went to a local jewellers to see how much they would give me. I then went onto one of the sites that martin recommends and they offered me much more than the jewellers were prepared to give.
The money was in my bank account the day after they received it.
I'm not sure about jewellery with stones in it though....have you read Martin's guide for further advice?2014 Target;

I took my platinum wedding band and engagement ring to a local jewellers too and they recommended eBay. I sold them as a set in the end. I used the money to go on holiday and thoroughly enjoyed it!
It may be worth a look to see how much similar rings to yours are selling for at the moment.
Enjoy the money, and treat yourself with it

I sold some old bits of jewellery for my Mum (to Ramsden's) when gold price was very high.
She was over the moon at the money she got as she'd given it to me a while before and forgotten about it. I was waiting for a good price.
I sorted out some stuff of mine to sell but the price of gold dropped and I'm now hanging on to it until I can get the same amount as before - I made a note of how many grams of 9ct, 18ct & 22ct I'd got and what it would make me.
Unless you are desperate to be rid of it, I'd hang on.0 -
Another ebay vote. I recently sold my old diamond/platinum engagement ring. Cost around £2k new. Tried lots of jewellers (local and in Hatton Garden) who quoted the minimum of 'not interested', then the lowest offer was £150, and the max £350 (a local one). Sold in the end on ebay for £623.
I did have certification papers though, and insurance valuation document, and original box, etc.
Got £60 for the platinum wedding ring in a local jewellers.
All better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
Understand the sad feeling. I felt awful doing it, but will never wear them again and am happy with someone else now. Still a bit strange to sell them. It's like saying it never meant anything when it did, and you feel like you're being ripped off.
Don't know how well second hand jewellery actually sells for, but I was astonished at the massive gap between second hand value and what they sell for when new. Had no idea it was so enormous. Maybe it's a great game to be in, or maybe they struggle to sell it on. Who knows...
