Anyone used a pom pom maker?

Having seen Kirstie Alsop use a pom pom maker and rave about it on her Christmas programme I was thinking of getting one and having a go at making some decorations for next Christmas. Has anyone had a go with one? I just wondered if they are as good as Kirstie said?

We used to make them using 2 bits of cardboard with holes in the middle - like large Polo mints.
If I remember correctly it was done like this ....
Wind the wool tightly round to make a fat Polo, cut around the edge & carefully tie up using the same wool between the two cardboard disks.
When you pull the disks away your left with a pompom :D

The best pom pom makers are plastic and split in half on a hinge - This lets you wind your wool really really fast - this is a much better and quicker way than the old school cardboard rings. If you are looking to make lots of pom poms quickly then these are great - I have some in different sizes and always look out for the ones with stronger hinges. Enjoy.

I've just been sitting making pom poms with the pom pom maker featured in Kirsty Alsop's programme, I love it, I made pom pom's to hang on the Christmas tree and I'm thinking of making fleece scarfs for my grand brats and puting pom pom's on the ends of them. I've no idea what else I could do with them but I did hear or read some where that someone made a rug using fleece instead of wool, I would imagine though that you would need the huge pom pom maker for that. I would show you a picture of the ones on the tree but I've no idea how to put one on here using the iPad ( computer went belly up just before Christmas ). I've just found instructions for making a rug that I'm sure any small girl would love in their room and I can see me getting rid of a lot of the wool that I have cluttering this place up :rotfl: http://www.instructables.com/id/Pompourri-Rug/
  • I bought the Clover hinged ones and they are really easy to use. Really quick to make pom poms too. I bought them after watching Kirsty make them. :)

Got one!! well two actually, large and medium came as a pair, works really well, very quick and easy to use and makes good pom poms. Will probably get the tiny one as well. My dd is addicted to it and is now making 'cat toys', sound like she is 6 yrs old, she is 18!!

Used to to it old style, with cardboard ring. If you're not planing to do a lot of pom poms on regular basis, I don't think you need to buy something special.

If you want to be MS, go old style - it still works!
If you want to make pompoms with others (more than 3 of you) at school, scouts, wherever - buying these gizmos will add up...

Unless you need to make an armada of wooly balls in a hurry, I'd stick with ceral packet circles every time! (Even then, I'd try Scouts first! All that child labour - and you provide the good cause for the community - boxes ticked in all directions!)

I've done a load of hoooooge pom poms to do a rug for my bathroom, it's not to be used it's just for show as we're hoping to put the house on the market sometime soon and I think it'll make the room look different I'm also thinking of making tie backs for the curtains in some of the bedrooms we don't use.

Brilliant! I have never heard of these before - what a great idea.
Are they as simple to use as they seem?
