Help with insulation/new boiler whilst receiving DLA

Options
Hi all

Apologies if this is in the wrong place. I was wondering if anyone knew if there are any grants available to help with the cost of a new boiler and insulating solid walls if you are in receipt of DLA? My DD is severely autistic and we had to move home to get her into the most suitable school. However, I have been advised that because we have no mains gas (oil central heating), we are probably not entitled to any help. Our boiler is on its way out and I was wondering if there were any schemes etc which would help?

TIA :)

I don't think there is anything as DLA is not income related benefit. DLA and working tax credit disability element aren't normally on any of the help schemes. Sorry I was in similar situation 2 years ago when my system failed.

Do you receive any other benefits and which country are you in?

  • Thank you for the replies. I receive the higher rate DLA and CA for my daughter and we receive child tax credit but we both work. We are in England.

    Hi there,

I had my loft lagged at the end of 2012 and they checked my walls for cavity wall insulation.

This was a free scheme as I am on DLA my ESA is contributions based.. i checked this a few times that I still counted and all they asked for was my DLA letter. However I can't remember who did it.. it was one of the big electricity companies but not my one.

Maybe start by contacting your energy company to see if they are running any schemes?

Maybe get your loft done but don't think they will help with insulating solid walls.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
  • Thanks all, will have a little search round :)
  • DLA can qualify you for free loft insulation and cavity wall insulation but it doesn't provide qualification for solid wall insulation. Your local council, however, may have funding specifically for solid wall insulation (I know that some do). You need to check with your own LA for any schemes.

DLA isn't a means tested benefit though, so you won't automatically qualify for a new boiler because of the DLA aspect of your benefit. Obviously your earnings will determine whether you are above the threshold for a grant anyway, but if push comes to shove, you may find you'll need to get a new boiler through a regular payment scheme.

There used to be a thing called WarmFront a few years ago now, don't know if it fell victim to the 'cuts'. It used to be possible to get a boiler replacement if you're on certain benefits, and DLA or AA were included even though they're not means-tested..

Here you go - the WarmFront scheme ended a year ago but here's its replacement. http://www.affordablewarmthgrants.co.uk/grants/warm-front-scheme.htm

with awrmfront, the qualifier was a disability benefit. with the replacement, there is also an income criteria
