When does p45 expire?

Hi,

I know that p45's go "out of date" at some point, I was just wondering when that point was?

I have one dated Sept 13, am I better off filling in a p46 when I start my new job?

Thanks

they are for the tax year, so they are valid until the end of the Tax year

Oh, I thought it was less than that.

I had a similar gap before and got put an 0T tax code which is for no p45 or p46. I assumed my p45 must have been out of date (it was the same tax year) but maybe the company just did it wrong?

Are you claiming JSA? If so, once your claim is closed, the jobcentre will automatically send you an up to date one.

Its possible they made a mistake, or that the tax information didn't update in time for payroll.

Its not a major problem either way, the p45 simply helps get it right quicker, it should sort it self out eventually

its not uncommon for it to happen on your first pay

Some companies wont take a P45 if its older than 6 weeks. I was always taught that.

We always waited for the HMRC notification.

I can't imagine on what basis any company could arbitrarily introduce such a rule, and I would hope that any that did would be reprimanded by HMRC if it was reported. A P45 is not just any old piece of paper, and companies should follow the law on how they are to be used.

The following link to the HMRC website gives tables for employers advising what action they should take when they receive a P45 however old it is. There is nothing there about them going out of date.
