Wheelchair falling to bits after 6 months...

Hey,

Looking for some advice please?

My partner and myself went wheelchair shopping in June, and as it was his first one and something so specific(needs measured etc) we felt going to a shop was the best option.

We went to a local shop and settled for one at circa £1000. The only one they had was the display model, and as it was prebuilt we thought this was ideal as it saved a job!

Since then we've had no end of trouble with it- handles falling off, footrests falling off, the cushion has lost all support and screws falling out.

We don't really want a replacement as it can't all have been down to poor building skills at the shop.

It's an off the shelf one, so it hasn't been personalised in any way.

I just think that for £1000 we should be able to get more than 6 months out of it?

Any help would be awesome!

Cheers

  • Sales of Goods Act would give you a reasonable life from anything you buy from a shop.

As it is over 6 months old technically its your responsibility to show the issues are not caused by miss use/ expected wear and tear however in practice most shops wont demand this in the first year or so.

It is however the shops right to decide if they repair, replace or refund, you can express a preference but not demand.

In the first instance approach the shop with the issues and your preferred method of resolution
  • When you found any of the faults, did you by any chance make any contact with the shop at the time?

If so, this should help your case as you will be able to show that the problems started before the 6 month period.

What have the shop done to rectify faults, really apart from usual where and tear most issues should be under guarantee. My wife is reliant on a wheelchair and we have been to a few places, hers is personalised however so far all companies have a supplied a 24 month all in warranty. Very handy for us as she tends to need a new chair that often anyway due to her changing health.

How often are you checking that footpads etc need tightening? They can often work loose fairly quickly as they are getting a bumpy ride. Unless we buy the top range cushioning my wife needs hers replacing seat and back every 4-6 months.
  • Thanks all!

I emailed them about a month ago, and I'll hold my hands up and say communication slipped on our side with it being Christmas, and him being in hospital.

I'll chance my luck with a refund, and see what I can get...

    Cheers

The footplates we tighten most days, and the cushion is needing replaced imminently... this time it will be a top of the range one:)

Bear in min if they do agree to a refund then it won't be a full refund.

It could be for the full amount, the law allows them to discount for the use already received, it doesnt mandate that they have to do this
