Root Canal

I've a great NHS dentist, who did a root canal on me a couple of years ago. However apparently there are three roots and she was only able to reach two of them. Now having paid for that, the third root needs doing and she claims it is too difficult for a general dentist so I have only two choices; 1) have the tooth out on the NHS or 2) go to a private specialist for around £500-£1,000.
Does the NHS really not employ specialists in dentistry?0 -
Does the NHS really not employ specialists in dentistry?
They employ some specialist oral surgeons, and orthodontists, and !!!!!dontists (I bet the censor program affects that!) but not endodontists (root fillers) or periodontists (gum specialists)How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Not quite true, our community dentists have just got a specialist endodontist to treat patients who are having head and neck radiotherapy or are on if bisphosphonates. However no general dentist is allowed to refer to them and the only other places where there are endodontists are dental hospitals and virtually all will not allow referrals for root treatment.
So practically if you have a difficult root treatment your only option is to be seen privately. A private specialist will have invested in equipment (endodontist microscope £15,000) , materials (mdta cement £60 a go, single use files £40 upwards a go etc) and post graduate training and qualifications (sky's the limit but say starting £25,000) so that's where the money goes on using one. Practically the nhs cannot afford to spend hundreds on saving one tooth when it has to carefully prioritise spending in these difficult times.0 -
People thinking about having root canals should investigate the link between them and cancer.

Yes - but 'investigate' doesn't mean looking at nutty blogs with either no scientific evidence, or gross misuse of statistics!
Did you know 99% of women with breast cancer have worn tights?
That doesn't mean that tights cause breast cancer! How to find a dentist.

Investigate means looking at all the information out there with an open mind.Toothsmith wrote: »Yes - but 'investigate' doesn't mean looking at nutty blogs with either no scientific evidence, or gross misuse of statistics!

The link I posted was written by doctors and dentists if you had bothered to read it before expressing a narrow minded view.0 -
believe me, we have read those links before.
If you actually look on a recognised cataloging system there is very little in the way to back up their claims. Being doctors and dentists does not in any way mean they are correct

still nothing with different search options

fwiw when I read the information these guys put up it intrigues me .... they discuss that you shouldnt have an RCT as its going to give you breast cancer and as such discuss your alternatives ....
1) denture which they say is not ideal as it is not fixed
2) a bridge which is not ideal because you have to damage other healthy teeth which may cause them to die off this needing more extractions.... plus they contain metal which should not be attached to the body
3) implant .... well these are not ideal either because they too are metal and we know (apparently) how bad that is
So really you have zerio alternatives in their eyes.
No one has actually figured out what a biological extraction is either ... aside from being more expensive0 -

Just remember Dr Andrew Wakefield caused probably one of the biggest public health disasters with his whacky theories on Autism & MMR.
It took off amongst the 'open minded' internet 'experts' who have no idea how to interpret medical data and statistics.
Wakefield was shown to have commercial interests that directed his 'research' and he was rightly struck off and completely discredited for his extremely dangerous bad science. How to find a dentist.
