I often find mine are better if I keep them filed. I use the cheap emery board type files. If I remember I do it whilst watching TV.

Once I've used my birthday and Christmas stash of hand creams, I use cheap aqueous cream which seems to work well. OH swears by it to cure cracks on his knuckles.

I work as a cleaner in a Nursing Home so wash my hands at least 20 times a day and dry them on cheap paper towels  :rotfl:

You need a decent handcream. It's probably the dryness thats causing the constant breakage.

Once youve sorted out the cream your nails should start looking healthy!

I have never had good nails. Tried everything, Nail Envy, Sally Hanson, Crystal Nail files.
Earlier this year I changed my diet to a low carb and low fat diet. I also took a vitamin D and cod liver oil tablet per day. For the first time in my life, I now have to cut my nails. I also lost weight but get the most enjoyment from painting my nails.:)

Some may find that Aqueous cream does not work for them as a moisturiser, it is intended to replace soap in washing and is great for that, but it can sting and aggravate skin conditions if used on dry skin (I found this from experience when told to use it by health professional and then did some research)

  • I've bought shellac off ebay and it arrived today. My mum uses it and she loves it! but you do need a nail lamp to cure them.

Il be giving it a go as I no longer can afford salon prices. Base and top oat cost £5.98 free postage. My lamp was £10.

I'm trying this to aid growth as my nails have always been thin.

Short nails can look just as nice if they're kept neat - infact I think dark dramatic nail colours look better on short nails.

I also feel my nails feel stronger when they're painted which tends to let me grow them out a bit more.

    My routine:
    Essie Ridge filling base coat
Two coats of whatever polish I'm using.
Topped with a generous layer of Seche Vite (although I've just bought Out The Door on recommendation from TiffanyD on youtube)

I use Nailoid manicure cream on my nails, I find it especially helps on my toe nails at the end of summer where they're dry from being constantly painted all summer.

My mum first started using it after her nails got ruined with a fungal infection, they're back to normal and perfect now.

  • Another option if Nail Envy doesn't work out for you (it works for some people, not for others - it didn't work for me) is Duri Rejuvacote, around £6 on ebay from an international seller, I am really rough on my nails but this is doing them wonders, no more peeling and they are really long!
  • I agree with opi nail envy, Leighton Denny crystal file, cuticle oil and hand cream
I had awful nails until I was 29 then I decided to get acrylics and as they were done by people that wore masks they ruined my nails for years after! I know to avoid salons with masks now!! And since I started with nail envy in 2007 my nails have got so much better and I now get comments on them
Within 6 months of using nail envy it had great nails
    Good luck!!

Thanks for all the replies - I really do appreciate it, lots of useful info.

I use Aqueous Cream already, as does my husband who works outdoors. I know that if I put some on my hands just before I go to sleep on a night it really softens them so I need to make sure I do this every night.

I need to make sure I have some handcream at work too, we have really horrible cheap liquid soap in the toilets which doesnt do my hands any favours.

I used to have acrylic nails too, which I cant afford now anyway, and I never had them very long - I like the short but dramatic look too. And anyway I cant manage my contact lenses if my nails are too long!
