So, fares are going up again...

.. in order to spread the cost of running the trains more evenly between the passenger and the tax payer, apparently.
News flash BBC, the people buying tickets to get in to work each day ARE the tax payers! They're already paying both portions! So you'll need to think up another brilliant reason that isn't 'we want lots of money and so do the people who own the train networks' I'm afraid.
It's frightening how stupid the government/ big businesses think we are. I don't even commute and I'm fuming.

I cannot recall that statement.
Perhaps you meant to say:"in order to spread the cost of running the trains more effectively between the passenger and the tax payer"
In other words, those who use the trains should pay something nearer the cost of the service provided.Wicked_witch wrote: »It's frightening how stupid the government/ big businesses think we are.
I make no comment on that point... except to say they are apparently right in some cases.

Yes, it's definitely all to do with how much trains cost to run and nothing at all to do with greedy executives liking money.

I'm not sure what part of my point you didn't get, but subtly calling me stupid is definitely the most effective way to make yours.0 -

It's the point you made in your original post... about spreading the cost between the passenger and taxpayer more evenly.0 -

Train companies (in this instance) and the government do not think people are stupid, but they are acutely aware that there is almost nothing that most people can do about it.
Despite the annual fare rises (generally above inflation) passenger numbers continue to grow at a rate faster than the infrastructure can accommodate.Employee of a National Rail train company.0 -
Frankly public transport prices is appauling. I pay £4.90 return for a 12 mile journey once a week which costs me otherwise about £3.50; my partner making a slightly longer journey costing £8.20 which would cost £5.90 in fuel. But the real bug bear is we are completely priced out of using public transport more frequently if travelling together or with the child. So about £16-£20 for a journey to the city which we could drive for a significantly less - we need a car anyway so wear isn't that much more.0
