Tesco partial refund under sales of goods act
holl
I rang Tesco regarding my digital camera which has broken after only 18 months. I know it is out of warranty and good enough they said that they would get someone to call me as I'd be covered under the sales of goods act.
I paid £189 for the camera 18 months ago and they have offered me a £75 refund. Can anyone let me know if this is reasonable or if I should have expected more or a replacement camera of the same value?
Thanks

It's extremely unlikely that you would get a replacement camera as this would mean that you would have had full use of the old one for 18 months at no cost to yourself.
However, I think that £75 is too low of an offer as it's slightly less that 40% of the cost of what you paid.
I would have expected a digital camera to last at least 3 years, and possibly more so I would contact them and ask if they would consider increasing the amount offered to reflect this.
I would have thought that 50% to 60% of the cost would be more realistic.
You might find that you get a better offer is you ask for the partial refund to be paid in the form of Tesco vouchers.
You are under no obligation to do this but it may help.0 -

In principle I would agree however it does also depend on what has happened to that model of camera. If it has been discontinued then you may well be able to pick up a new one for 75 quid in which case the offer would be very generous
As a basic litmus test, see how much they are selling on eBay as secondhand0 -
Thanks very much for the advice.
I have called Tesco again and they are going to look into it and ring me back. In the meantime I'll check to see if the model of camera is still available and how much 2nd hand on e-bay.
I will update how it goes, when I hear back.0 -
You are lucky they are offering anything to be honest if it is out of warranty,
They could have said Ii's out of warranty, take it to a repairer, find out what the fault was, pay for it. If it was an inherent fault, then they would have offered you something and refunded you the cost of the report.
If the report said it was not an inherent fault, you would have no camera and be down on the repairers report cost too.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I'd also say it depends on the specs too. For example, if it was a budget "professional" type camera, I'd expect it to last less time than if it was a mid-high prices average camera. Unfortunately things are sometimes cheaper for a reason. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0

I'd say it was a fair offer.0

Around that budget you could get something like the below to replace it
