Debit Card payment declined

I have never heard of a debit CARD payment incurring a declined fee before. Are you sure about this one?0

No. That's not what I said at all. Some banks allow you until close of business until they decline the payment. This is much fairer as you don't know when a card payment is going to be applied for. I bought festival tickets as a Christmas present online on December 3rd but the company didn't apply for the funds until Christmas Eve.
However if you'd read my post correctly I said that what OP needs to do in these circumstances is ring the bank and ask them to manually process that payment.
They do it no bother. I do this four times a year for my elderly parents when their pensions are paid into their HSBC account on a different day in the 4 five week accounting periods of the year that their pension provider operates to. The computer may say no, but up until close of business, if you speak to someone at the branch, and they see that funds have cleared that day, the payment will be made.Sealed pot challenge member #325

What we have here is a classic difference between people with an "arts" background and those with a "science" background.
The ones with the arts background will leave no margin for error, no slack in the system and most times it will work - but when it eventually fails as all systems do always - they go mad and blame everyone else when it costs them.
The ones with the science background know that all systems fail eventually and so they do leave slack in the timings to ensure that when the inevitable failure occurs there is a no cost/penalty route out.
The arts people think the science people are nuts for planning for things that wont happen for a long time - if ever. The science people don't understand why the arts people get so upset when it fails as it is perfectly obvious from their viewpoint that the messup was bound to happen eventually.
Needless to say we tend not to get arts type people flying aircraft as assuming that the engine won't fail or for a glider assuming that the winch cable won't break on launch/takeoff is a mistake that still cost some people their lives.0 -

That seems a bit harsh, in my opinion. Personally, I just think it is down to different people managing money in different ways.
I'm doing an English Lit PhD, so I guess you'd say I've an "arts background" (or maybe you'd take my accountancy qualification to be "science background?!), however, I would not manage my money in the way that you suggest that - with an arts background - I should.
I think it's dangerous territory to start singling people out based on their academic background, but each to their own

Of course, the fact that banks pay debits FIRST before credits are usually applied makes a mockery of same-day credits. Even IF the debit and credit clear on the same day, the debit can cause an O/d balance and a charge, even if the subsequent credit means there no O/d into the next day.

The original post was about a debit card payment not being paid banks have no control over when merchants present these for payment so if no funds available when merchant puts it through it declines YOU WOULD NOT BE CHARGED FOR THIS. So when funds did go in unless merchant put payment in again it wouldn't be paid.0

I manage my account very well thanks!! It was a banking error not my error so no I wasn't talking about myself but the imbeciles on here!!!!!
We didn't run our accounts down to so close to zero that we were at the mercy of a timing issue.
