It is necessary to test the page before going live to ensure the servers can handle the volume of traffic and the site does not stop working.

In IT speak this is called stress testing and is normally done just before going live, the site is made available for a short period of time then hit by code designed to simulate lots of normal users while monitoring the performance.

This is the first time it's gone live and then taken down again though
