My OH has been using my old Compaq Presario lap top, the top cover started cracking some time ago, and this week the hinge cover fell off and it appears that the cable wihich runs into the back of the screen has been almost pinched through. I am fairly sure that getting a new screen fitted is going to cost more than the blooming thing is worth and certainly almost as much as buying him a simple replacement.
Any ideas, I have not got the slightest idea how to go about trying to get the screen replaced, I bought the compaq in 2003, and it cost me a whopping £1,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought myself an Acer Aspire 5050 when I sold the desk top just before we moved in April, really did not want to have to lay out for a new one for OH but I have a feeling I am going to have to.................

IF you meant to asj "can I fix the flexible film cable linking the scren to the laptop PCB", I'd say good luck.
I once tried to fix one of those on a palmtop, and stopped before ruining it completely. These film PCBs are a great invention, but you don't want to mess with them.0 -
No I do not want to even try and repair the cable, what I want to know is would it be better to buy a new laptop or try and get it repaired????Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0

If I knew for sure it was the flat cable, and if it isn't soldered on either side, I'd look or a cracked monitor and retrieve the cable from it.0

It does not appear to be a flat cable but a round one, since I took the piece if broken hinge out it seems to be working ok, ut to be on the safe side I have backed everything from it onto discs, so if it does give out he has not lost all the stuff.............Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0
