Gift returns - Tale of two retailers

Why can't we have a standard returns policy operated by all retailers?
Took an item back to Selfridges after Christmas - no problems item returned and credit voucher received - excellent! One happy customer!
Took an item back to Armani Exchange- they extended the return period to 28 days over Christmas but only for exchange and not refund (the original receipt was 14 days exchange or refund) Not even an open dated credit . Now the shop is full of sales stock with little choice in size. One very unhappy customer who will not be buying Christmas presents from them again!

Because if this was to be forced on all retailers then they would probably all adopt the same policy, no returns unless goods are faulty.

You can't legally stop shops from offering a returns policy that is better that that required by law.

They do all have the same policy, it's call your statutory rights, anything else they have is above and beyond that.

If you've got an extended returns date why not wait another week until the sale stock is reduced and the new season stock comes in and then exchange then?

Did the receipt not tell you about the policy at Armani?

If their returns policy is above what you are legally entitled to, there is no requirement for it to be stated on the receipt.
It's always best to assume that any retailer won't accept change of mind returns unless you know otherwise.
